Joan Jenewein Obituary

Joan Jenewein, 89, of Beallsville, Ohio (New Castle Community), passed away Saturday, January 17, 2026 in WVU Wheeling Hospital.  A daughter of the late William and Ina Hickman Thomas,  "Joan,"  as she was lovingly known to friends and family, was born "Mary Joan Thomas" on August 23, 1936 at the family’s home near Beallsville.   Joan was a caring mother and homemaker and had also been employed at the former Woodsfield Nursing and Rehab Center for many years.  She was a member of the Beallsville First Christian Church.

Joan enjoyed all four seasons, however any time that she could sit on the porch, drink coffee, and enjoy her flowers was her very favorite time of the year.  She loved cooking for one or for 20.   All she asked, was that no one left the table hungry.  Many will remember the wonderful meals she lovingly prepared and especially her delicious homemade pies.  She loved traveling to the Amish Country; she especially enjoyed trips to the beautiful farms in the Springtime when all the newborn animals could be seen roaming the fields.  And no visit to the Amish Country would be complete without stopping to eat at even one of her favorite restaurants.

In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Neal Jenewein;  a brother and sister-in-law, William “Bill” and Wanda Thomas; a sister, Shirley Thomas; also her loving companion of many years, Jack Hartline.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Lisa Jenewein (Mike Monigold) of Beallsville and Dale Jenewein (Brenda Craig) of Armstrong Mills; a brother and sister-in-law,  Lowell “Pete” and Judy Thomas, of Malaga; several nieces and nephews; her extended Hartline family; also a devoted circle of friends that Joan talked to each day and loved dearly.  Her “famiy-by-heart” also included her Amish family.  One of the highlights of the last weeks of Joan’s life was the visit by Amish children from the Faith View School who came to the hospital to sing to her.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 21 from 4pm to 6pm at Wilson Funeral Home - Harper Chapel, Beallsville.  Visitation will also be held Thursday, January 22 from 12noon until the time of the funeral service at 1pm with Wayne Clark offering words of comfort.  Burial will follow in Ebenezer Cemetery, Bethesda.

Joan’s family would like to offer a very special “thank-you” to Tim Woodell and family, Isaac Yoder, John Yoder, and Mike Monigold for taking care of the family farm and the animals so that they could be able to spend time at the hospital with her during her extended stay.

In keeping with Joan's giving spirit, her family requests that in lieu of flowers and keepsakes, memorial contributions be made to Faith View School, 59167 S. 26 Road, Bethesda, Ohio 43719 in order that the children at the school can continue to make others as happy as they have made Joan.
